Is It A New Year Already?  Where does the time go?

The holiday season is upon us yet again.  For the Christians of the world Christmas has come and gone as if in a dream.  I hope that everyone had a blessed and peaceful one.  One thing is certain for everyone on our planet, whether you be Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu, a new year is here.  And with the coming of the New Year, it is not only a constant reminder of how quickly one year passes to the ext, but how we are not immortal.  Time is the antagonist in the New Years' celebrations.  Due to the  signiificance of time, we use manyexpressions pertaining to time and the New Year. Let's see if you can guess these popular New Year's expressions. Some of them are self explanatory and  some areless literal.  Give it a try.  Match the expression to the meaning and then check answers on the bottom of the page.  
1.Time flies.                                A. To decide to make a change in your life.
2.Wipe the slate clean.                              B. To begin the New Year in an exciting way.
3.Time marches on.                        C. To stay up until after midnight on New Year's  Eve.
4.Time will tell.                                                  D. Time passes very quickly.
5.Turn over a new leaf.                                E.. The years pass very quickly; you can't stop or slow it down
6.See the old year out.                        F. We don't know what will happen in the future;
                                                      we can only wait and see.
7.Start the New Year off                               G. To Enjoy yourself  with a bang.             
8.Eat, drink and be merry.                               H. Make a fresh start; try to forget problems or
                                             mistakes from the past.
Here are the expressions used in sentences.  You should be able to understand the meaning through the context in the sentences.
1.        I can't believe it is 2006 already.  Boy, time flies!
2.        Listen!  Stop worrying about failing your math exam. It's time to wipe the slate clean.  This is a new year and it is no good to dwell on the past.  You can do better this year.
3.        Even if you don't want it to, time marches on.  
4.        I don't know if you will meet the woman of your dreams this year, only time will tell.
5.        Tom got arrested last year for theft.  But he promised his wife that this year he would turn over a new leaf and get a good job and stay out of trouble.
6.        Usually children have to go to bed early, but New Year's Eve is an exception to the rule.  They can see the old year out with their parents.
7.        Sammy and Robert are starting the New Year off with a bang.  They are going to jump out of an airplane and set off fire works in the sky.  
8.        Everybody, please eat, drink and be merry!  Help yourselves to the champagne and snacks!
